Thanks for checking out this site. I hope you enjoy looking around and seeing what’s here.
Simply put, I write to tell the stories of people and places and situations that don’t get a lot of press. I write to tell the truth about human suffering and injustice in a way that hopefully feels tangible and compelling.
You’ll notice that my books are fiction. This is because I think that most people enjoy stories. Most of us like getting immersed in the quandaries, questions and triumphs of people between pages. I also like fiction because I think that it doesn’t just reflect life – it can help change the world we live in.
I live in Texas with my family, far from the naked, charred villages of Darfur. I live in the city of Houston, a world away from atrocities in eastern Congo, the sex-trafficked brothels in southeast Asia and the squalid refugee camps at the border of Chad and Sudan.
Though I’m far from immune to bad things happening here, I live in peace and relative safety.
But I’ve become convinced that my security offers great opportunity to help pursue peace and justice for those who may be unable to secure it for themselves.
You see, I believe that there’s no such thing as “voiceless” people or groups in this world. Every human being has been given a voice, has been provided the ability to, in some way, communicate. But what happens is systematic acts of oppression, works of brutality, can overcome and silence the cries of those targeted for abuse and destruction.
So this nexus of personal freedom and another’s dire need is where I see opportunity. For me, it’s a chance to seize the moment and write books that tell the hard truth about what’s happening in some of the world’s most marginalized regions. It’s also working with special interest groups and the good people in our government to help bring about change.*
Finally, I write to inspire action. Understanding the plight of others is just a small part of catalyzing change. So after you read one of my books, it’s my hope that you’ll find the thing that you can do to evoke change – and then do it. Because if we all opted not to remain silent about human injustice, and we all did something to help interrupt and end it, then who knows what good is possible?
Cheers!
Elizabeth
